Women’s sweatshirts: style icon with recognition value
Women’s sweatshirts keep you warn in a cool way: stylish prints and comfortable fits have what it takes to become your absolute favourite when it comes to everyday looks. So, what’s actually the difference between a sweatshirt and a jumper for women? We explain typical features!
How to recognise high-quality sweatshirts for women
Sweatshirts offer room to breathe and move, they are soft to your skin and they look really trendy. All these features reveal the origins of sweatshirts – sports and exercising! In the 1920s, these “shirts you wear when sweating” were a great revolution. Sportsmen and sportswomen used the clothes made of cotton when warming up for or cooling off after exercising. The soft and fleecy inside is moisture wicking and therefore perfect for workouts and sports activities. Very soon, sweatshirts for men and women entered other areas of life, e.g. as college uniforms.
For sportswear, manufacturers use synthetic fibres for better moisture-wicking properties. In addition, these fabrics are more breathable. For example casual sports jackets for women are made of polyester. Today, sweatshirts are very popular even outside schools and colleges. Over time, women’s sweatshirts adapted to new requirements – such as a “cool look” – by a few innovations: as a kind of by-product manufacturers added a hood – and voila, the hooded sweatshirt, or hoody, was born. Another feature added was a practical zipper and so the common sweatshirt for men and women became a sweat jacket or hooded sweat jacket.
How to care best for your sweatshirt and hoody
These certain women’s sweatshirts might look uncomplicated but they need special care, too. If you like to wear your favourite sweatshirts as long as possible, best would be to use mild detergents and don’t wash your clothes at too high temperatures – 30° to 40° C is enough. And how do you keep the new sweatshirt fleecy and soft? Often, the comfortable sweat jackets becomes a “hard disappointment” after a few washings. The common reason for this – especially when your sweatshirt is a high-quality product of a popular brand – is the wrong way of washing. So, please use a fabric softener every second or third washing.
Attention: Clothes made of elastane or spandex don’t like fabric softeners. Wash your women’s sweatshirts or other clothes made of elastane always without fabric softeners. However, apart from all its positive features and properties we have to admit that the typical sweat fabric tends to lose shape. That’s why many popular brands mix cotton fabrics and synthetic fibres. If your favourite sweatshirt is made of 100 percent cotton, you can still avoid unwanted oversized clothes e.g. by using mesh laundry bags and a spin dryer with 1,000 rpm max. And in order to keep your sweatshirt always in perfect shape, you could dry it lying and not hanging on the laundry rack.
